A great deal of people would love to change their odometer reading on their car or truck. They might feel that an odometer correction is needed. However, to change the odometer is a Federal crime and you will not be happy with the results if you are caught and brought to justice. There are very few reasons that you would ever want to correct your odometer and even fewer reasons that you can legally change it. Many years ago, some dealers would make an 'odometer correction' by rolling back the mileage on a vehicle. It is funny how they never had to roll it forward to make an 'adjustment.' The odometer on your vehicle is one of the most important aspects that can affect the price of the vehicle when you are trying to sell or trade it in. For this reason, it is illegal in the US to tamper with the odometer in any form or fashion. Some people may want to correct their odometer because they found out that they have been using the wrong size tires on their vehicle. Using the wrong size can affect the speedometer and could cost you a ticket or two and it can also affect how the odometer tracks your miles. However, even if you ran with the wrong size tires for many tens of thousands of miles, you probably will not be able to change the odometer for this reason. You will have probably just lost out on the mileage.
One reason that is allowed for odometer correction is when your odometer has quit working. If you ran the vehicle for a long period of time and are reasonably certain you know how many miles you have used while it was down, you can get an odometer correction done to the vehicle at an authorized dealer or repair shop. However, you will need to make sure you change your title to show that you have adjusted the odometer or even to let others know it is not working. You might have some trouble finding someone who will be willing to change the odometer for you. Perhaps your regular mechanic who knows about the problem and who has been working on the car for many years may be willing to do it.If you choose to have an odometer correction done to the vehicle, make sure the people doing it are authorized to do so and have all the necessary paperwork that is needed. You can contact your local courthouse that takes care of titles to get more information on what you might need and what to expect in the future if you have the odometer correction done to your vehicle as you wish to. Be smart and disclose the information to anyone you might be interested in selling your vehicle to, even if they do not ask. |
