Have you ever thought about odometer calibration? Most people have never thought about this for their car and even if they had, would never perform such a feature because tampering with your odometer is considered fraud and punishable under US law. However, there is a fine line between odometer fraud and simply adjusting your odometer's calibration. An odometer keeps track of how many miles your vehicle has traveled and is important in determine the base amount a vehicle may be bought or sold for. The odometer uses a gear ratio to calculate how far the vehicle has traveled. Most US vehicles are set to count one thousand spins as one tenth of a mile. If you think your vehicle's odometer is off, you can test it in a number of ways. Write down your mileage to the tenth of a mile and move from one mile-marker to the next. When you reach the next one, you should have traveled exactly one mile. If the number is off, you may need to have an odometer calibration completed. Sometimes, the amount the calibration is off is so small that you will not be able to see the difference. If you are still concerned, take the vehicle in to an authorized location that has the tools to check the calibration. If you are looking to buy a car, you might also have this checked on the vehicle to ensure a previous driver has not make a change that will affect the overall odometer mileage. Any decent mechanic will be able to determine if someone (including you) have adjusted the calibration of the vehicle. If you are interested in seeing how the calibration system works, you might wish to take apart the odometer of a bicycle and see how the odometer will spin and how the gears work. With a pair of needle nose pliers, you can adjust the gear ratio and you will see the change this can make when you reassemble the bicycle odometer. Think twice before making this type of adjustment to your vehicle or anyone's vehicle for that matter. Digital odometer calibration is far easier to do if you have the equipment. The equipment needed is very expensive and often impossible for just anyone to get his or her hands on it, as it could be misused to make illegal odometer adjustment. Odometer calibration is a simple task to perform but it should be left up to the experts and those who know what they are doing. Do not put yourself at risk making the calibration yourself unless you are experimenting on a bicycle. Avoid problems with reselling or getting the full value of your vehicle by leaving odometer calibration to authorized personnel only. |
